It's been a long time since I blogged about Grace.  Since my last blog Pat got a new job in Pennsylvania and life became a blur of the activities of packing, selling our house, buying a new home, moving, and now fixing up our new place and settling in to life in Bucks County, PA.  It's been an exciting time and Grace has swung with all of the changes just beautifully.  As we packed up her toys she helped put them into the boxes.  As her room filled up with boxes and life as she knew it changed once again, she acted as if it was no problem at all. After all, this was her family, and wherever we went, she knew she was going too! And whatever crazy thing we were doing, she knew she was a part of.

Grace is now running, giving big hugs and kisses, playing with her baby doll, engaging her brothers in wild play at night, saying a loud "Don't!" when life doesn't go her way, and yes - sleeps wonderfully!!  It only took her one year and a move but now she sleeps all night long in her own bed and I got to return to our bed as well.  She takes a good 2+ hour nap and now that I have a little noise machine in her room, she doesn't seem to waken in the middle of it for every little bit of family (or dog) noise!

She loves puzzles and does them way better than any of our boys ever did at her age.  Since we got her, she has liked things with lots of pieces and now we're seeing that it has reflects an analytical mind.  She will strive to get the puzzle right then dump it out and do it over and over again until it comes with ease.  If we explain something to her, you can be sure that the next time she does it the way you asked, or the way the problem can best best be solved.  She is ever watching us and surprises me again and again when she joins me in some of my tasks with incredible specificity.

She still is quite attached to her mommy and cries when I leave the room. But with her increasing mobility, it is less of a problem because she just follows me - everywhere!  She likes to grab my face and pull me close and kiss me long and hard on my cheek. Then she smiles that huge wrinkled nose grin of hers that just makes me want to eat her up!

She loves having her family home for the weekends.  After our long summer together, on Monday mornings for several weeks she would grieve and cry and fuss terribly that they were gone.  But now on weekdays, the first thing she does is look at me and say, "Daddy?" and I will say, "He's at work." and she smiles.  Then she says, "Brubba?"  (for brothers?) and I say,  "They're at school." and she smiles.  Then she says, "Mom Mom?" and I say that she is at her house and she smiles yet again.  Then finally, she says, "Ruff ruff?" for our dog and I say, "He's downstairs." and yet one more smile. It's a lovely way to start each day!

Grace loves babies. If she sees one on TV she shouts "bebbe!!!"  and we have to keep going back 10 sec with our DVR over and over until we tell her "baby must have gone to sleep".  She cries when the baby is gone and gets so very upset.  She now loves her little American Doll itty bitty baby (thank you for the great gift Mr. and Mrs.  Perkins!) and covers her with a blanket, feeds her a bottle, rocks her in her arms, and pats her back.   And did I tell you that she loves it when she gets a bow put in her hair?  She also loves to find my shoes and my purse and put them on and walk around.  Yep, she's a girl, that's for sure!

Grace has been home with us for now just over a year and what a year it was!  Attachment is a real issue with adopted kids and for the most part, I think we weathered the initial storm. I'm sure there are times ahead when we will have to face all of the issues that have created a hole in Grace's life story, but for now, Grace is a happy, well-adjusted, darling little spunky near 2 year old. God created her to be a Fitzpatrick and a Fitzpatrick she is!  What a blessing to have her as ours!!

Today marks 6 months with our sweet baby girl. We've all come a long way in 6 months! It took me (Sharon) 5 months to feel as if I was back on my feet. I knew there would be a transition back to baby days with the additional attachment needs thrown in but I never dreamed it would take me that long!  As I write, Grace is celebrating in a similar way to when we got her - with sickness. It's her first real bout of sickness (high fever, vomiting, listlessness) but I believe today we did take a turn and she is over the hump.  After she recovers, she'll be back to her happy self. She's walking now, saying a few words (including Dada!), and taking definite likes and dislikes now to certain foods on a daily basis.  She's continued to be quite attached to her mommy but also seems more secure in that attachment as well. She's sleeping better at night (in her crib) but still needs the reassuring presence of me in her room (on a mattress on the floor).  She takes a nice 2 hour nap daily which is a big change from the 30-40 min naps she used to take when we first came home. Overall, we're seeing a more content and peaceful little lady and we can only believe that the next 6 months will steady her on her emotional feet even more.

This video was completed three weeks ago but was being stubborn in its refusal to be uploaded onto youtube.  Finally!   I hope each of you enjoys this!

There are still a few of you who like to check this site so I thought I'd give another caveat of a glimpse into Grace's life.  She has now been home for 4 months and is loving her new life with all of us.  She is giving us wet and wonderful kisses (see pic of Ryan below), standing with ease, taking first steps, crawling quickly, signing all sorts of words to communicate (like eat, done, please, sleep, more, and milk), and spends her days basically tethered to her mommy but loves having her brothers and Daddy hold her and play with her.  She has games she plays like the sideways game where she'll cock her head to the side whenever anyone does this to her and she'll smile one of those winning smiles.  She still, however, doesn't sleep perfectly through the night. We've resorted to having me sleep with her every night - side by side on two mattresses.  She wakens every few hours and searches for me in the dark (albeit with a nightlight on).  She is getting less frantic about it and the past few nights she's begun to more quickly soothe herself to sleep. So I'm hopeful that we are on our way to the next stage which would be putting her into her crib at night and have me sleep next to her on the floor. Then the final stage would be that Grace is perfectly content in her crib and I am perfectly snuggled back in my own bed next to my sweet husband.

These have taken a while to compile - my apologies to Sharon especially :-)  Taken together, the four movies are really one composite of our tours around Nanchang, including some independent walks that I had to gather footage.  If you followed our China blog, you've seen many of the pictures used in these movies, although they are blended with never before seen motion pictures and authentic chinese music.  I am posting a link to the first of the movies right now.  The other three will be added TO THIS SAME POST as soon as they are finished loading.  Enjoy!

For Christmas my mother gave me a FLIP camcorder. This thing is an amazing tiny device that allows me to capture lots of videos and upload them quicker than a wink!  Now I don't have to wait for Pat to do his magic (which is phenomenal) or to upload from the bigger camcorder.  Also, whenever I post a new video the software makes it possible to send a notification email that something has been added.  It's not going to be at Grace for a Lifetime but rather it's a Flipshare.com address. I know baby footage can get monotonous but if you'd like to see clips of Grace (and us interacting with her), please say, "ADD ME TO THE LIST" and I'll do so.  Thanks!

We are providing a link to a new video that we have produced using the song "Merry Christmas" by Third Day.  This song has meant a lot to us through the years as each Christmas since 2005 came and went without Grace in our arms.

KLEENEX ALERT!  This video makes me cry every time I watch it...but it's a good cry :-)

Grace has said her first English word of Mamamam - for Mama.  After a few days of "mamamam" she is now occasionally looking at me and saying "Mama".  It isn't in plentiful supply but it's a beautiful thing to hear!  Ryan and Sean tell me this is not a real word and they haven't really seen her say it. But Pat and Ethan have heard her when she is leaning toward me with longing in their arms or on the floor reaching for me.  I guess the context she wants to use my name right now is out of desperation.  So when Sean and Ryan say, "Where's Mama?" real happy, she is not at all interested in saying "Mama!" ......yet!

Besides Mama, she also said another word this week. When we asked "How old is Grace?" she replied with outstretched pointer finger  and said-- "Uh!"  Now this, say Ryan and Sean, is a REAL word and thus must be her first word.

Note: She did say a few Chinese words that we could understand, namely "Mama" and "Baba" (for Daddy) while in China in reference to her Foster parents. Grace only spoke these words during the first 3 days we had her. Alas, we didn't  get it on video to prove it but we both attest that she did indeed say these words when she was sad.  And then at her first Dr. appointment while getting all of her shots she said "Boo!  ah - Boo!!" over and over again and Boo (spelling questionable) means "No" in Chinese.

Here Comes Grace!
Grace is now crawling and cruising with a new delight and excitement about exploring her world.  Within just a few short days she went from taking just 2 crude hand & knee moves to fluidity in motion.  The move was born out of desperation - "Must get to Mommy" who was always within just 5 - 10 feet either getting dressed, cleaning the high chair, picking up toys, etc.  I'd hear some fussing, then quietness, then suddenly look and there at my feet was the face of a little angel with arms outstretched imploringly to be held.  It took her about a week to discover that not only is it wonderful to be able to reach your mother wherever she may be, but be able to have a new found freedom.
Yesterday, all of a sudden Grace was everywhere! We'd put her down and within a few minutes say, "Hey! Where'd she go?!" Inevitably, the dog dishes were the favorite draw as were all the trashcans (now elevated out of her reach).  I spent this morning vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping to keep my little one safe and clean in her new explorations.  After all, it only took one little apple stem this AM and a choking fit to motivate me to get moving on this task of a higher level of baby proofing. I know that this stage comes with greater challenges but it also comes with more contentedness because our Grace is a mover. Look out world -- here comes Grace Lu Fitzpatrick!

Our Music Lover got some fun Tub Toys to Decorate her first Cake
Grace's birthday  was a joyous day that we were able to share with my Mom and Dad in Ocean City, New Jersey just after our Thanksgiving festivities.  During our 4 year wait we told people that our little girl would be "about a year old" and we secretly hoped and prayed that she'd be younger than a year. We didn't want to miss any more firsts in her life and we were eager for a baby and not just a toddler to join our family.  So it was with great joy that we were able to get Grace at 9 months and celebrate her first birthday with her!  She enjoyed her first piece of cake with a speed I haven't seen matched by my sons!  Her first taste of the icing was with a pucker but then she literally dove her hands in and shoveled it in as fast as she could.  She enjoyed the tactile sensation of squishing it between her fingers and I was absolutely amazed that at the end of it she wasn't nearly as messy as any of my sons had been either!  We strung some balloons and her Mom Mom taught her to vocalize onto the balloon to feel the vibrations - a trick she mastered and now does whenever you hand her a balloon. Meanwhile, her brothers taught her to hold up her first finger when they say, "How old is Grace?".  Happy Birthday Grace. May your life be filled with joys and the blessings of your caring Heavenly Father!
